“Post-Traumatic Ocular Infection Caused by Escherichia coli: A Case Report”

Introduction- penetrating injury of eye threatens the integrity of the globe and constitute an ocular emergency. often leads to severe vision loss in affected individuals and mishandling can cause irreversible blindness to the patient. Corneal wounds are common and all too often preventable injuries with potential significant visual sequelae. Aim of study is to report a rare cause of post- traumatic ocular infection due to Escherichia coli and to emphasize the importance of early microbiological diagnosis and appropriate antimicrobial therapy.

Case presentation – A 40-year-old male had wire penetrating injury in left eye, following which he had sudden loss of vision, and corneal haziness. Aqueous tap from injured eye was sent to microbiology laboratory as part of evaluation for culture and sensitivity. On direct microscopy gram negative bacilli and few gram-positive cocci in pair seen with no evidence of pus cell while culture and sensitivity of tap revealed Escherichia coli as a causative agent.

Conclusion Post traumatic ocular infections caused by gram negative bacilli is associated with rapid disease progression and poor visual outcomes. This case highlights the importance of early microbiological diagnosis and prompt institution of broad-spectrum antimicrobial therapy in post-traumatic ocular infection.
